Her face half in shadow, a geisha appears behind a screen, described in fine mica linear pattern; she is positioned close to this screen and to the picture plane, thus accessible and simultaneously, distant.
The delicate turn of her head and shoulders, soft colors and mask-like features lend her a mysterious and melancholy air.
Saito has used curves in cheek and hair to contrast with the angles of the kimono and turned neck; a grid of vertical and horizontal lines form the backdrop in the building behind, their windowns dimly repeating the red ornament in her hair.
Fine mica detail throughout.
Excellent condition; minor, very light
foxing in margin.
